Howard Place

Category A Listed

An elegant three storey Georgian townhouse in Inverleith close to Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Gardens. The building was sound but the interior had not been renovated in recent times and was in need of a full refurbishment. Nearly all of its original features were still in place: fireplaces in every room, even the smallest bedroom, beautiful cornices and ornate plaster ceiling roses.

The entrance vestibule opens onto the hallway through glazed double doors revealing the main staircase, the floor is finished with Victorian geometric and encaustic tiles throughout. The overpainted stair was cleaned of layer upon layer of paint to reveal the stone beneath and a new carpet runner added.

Edel relocated and designed the kitchen to make space for a large island unit centrepiece, the old kitchen space was subdivided to create a utility room and family shower. On the first floor the two principle rooms make equally magnificent master bedrooms. The master bathroom was designed to make the most of the enlarged the space, a contemporary freestanding bath now has views out over the parkland to the east.

At garden level Edel designed an entertaining space to replace the old, and underutilised, extension. Housing a drinks pantry and dining room the space occupies a new orangery created in collaboration with with Mozlowski and Murray. The glazed garden room opens out into into what will be a fully landscaped garden with water feature and pool around outdoor living space.
